Canyon Close Road and Fox Ridge Drive High Voltage Undergrounding

Pasadena Water and Power will continue construction on a high voltage undergrounding project on Canyon Close Road and Fox Ridge Drive. The infrastructure improvement aims to convert high voltage overhead power lines to the underground.
With the first phase of substructure installation completed in August, PWP internal crews will install underground electrical assets that will replace the existing overhead high voltage infrastructure. Additionally, there will be a coordinated piece-by-piece removal the high voltage overhead power lines and transformers, while also the shortening of the poles that remain, as the extra height will no longer be required. Overhead low voltage conductors and service drops to houses will remain in place, as will third party communication assets like phone and cable TV lines, and the shortened poles required to support the remaining lines.
Timeline and Location
Phase 2 will resume October 20th, with one to two weeks of underground electrical installation work, just within the new vaults in the street, with minimal overall impact to residents. Then work will transition to the rear-of-lot pole lines for replacement and upgrade efforts for the portions of the overhead assets that will remain. The project will culminate with the removal of the high voltage distribution lines, being the large conductors at highest elevation on the existing poles.
The goal for completion will be the December City Wide Moratorium the week of December 15th. Ingress and egress for residents will be maintained throughout construction, though the overhead work will require property access to the rear-of-lot poles. No work will be performed on the Holidays of Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Black Friday.
Impact
Customers will experience one to two short outages as the project progresses, with notifications provided several days in advance via PWP’s outage notification system. City crews will also provide a reminder the day before, in person, as they are already working in the neighborhood.
Traffic impact will be minimal, only centered around street vaults at time of equipment installation, or as materials arrive on site.
